Tech CEO Report Card

As a leader you want to be liked, or if you can make it happened…loved. If you can get and keep people on your side they tend to spend more time working and less time huddling in cubicles. quietly but passionately complaining about the boss. With this concept/desire in mind, the ever vigilant folks over at Glassdoor.com have just released a employee-generated report card for the CEO’s of the 12 largest tech companies. From Google’s much loved but soon to be ex-CEO Eric Schimidt (96%) to Microsoft’s not-so-adored Steve Ballmer (40%) the list gives us a decent snapshot of how these organizations are faring from the inside out. If your like me and you want to get a head start on next year’s Tech CEO Fantasy League draft, check out the entire list and anaysis at Glassdoor.com.

p.s. I am not sure there is an actual Fantasy League for CEOs, if there is please send me the link

Status and The Effective Leader

According to research by Clarkson University’s Stephen J. Sauer, perception of the status of the “leader” will determine whether their style is effective. In other words, leaders need to know how to market their status while choosing an appropriate style of leadership to go with it.

The Ups and Downs of Brand Evaluation

Branding is where it’s at. If you’ve got something to sell you can’t just throw it out there and hope for the best. That’s a great way to guarantee failure and a trip to foreclosure/bankruptcy land.  Some companies have worked for decades to get it just right. Apple ($500 million), Microsoft ($1.4 billion) , Disney ($517.6 million) and other top companies spend giant sums every year on advertising, marketing and branding. But according to the website 247wallst.com knowing the true essence of a brand, or it’s “brand value”, is “more an art than a science“.

In a recent article the folks over at 247wallst.com explain the modern art of brand evaluation and also highlight how it can go wrong with a  list of the World’s Most Misunderstood Consumer Brands. These are big names from the consumer products biz that perhaps need to do a better job of telling us not what they have done, but what they are doing.  It’s both a fascinating article and a list that might make you rethink how you are percieved not only by those you sell to, but also those you lead.

Unwritten Rules for Women in the Workplace

We all have to deal with the “unwritten rules” of the workplace. Women, in particular, need to be more proactive by utilizing the “unwritten rules” for advancement and leadership recognition.

Catalyst.org, one of the leading nonprofits focused on expanding opportunities for women in business, recently put out a series of reports on these rules titled Unwritten Rules: Why Doing a Good Job Might Not Be Enough Europe. The third report in this series examines European respondents’ perceptions of unwritten rules to advancement as well as how they learned to navigate these rules within their organizations. The study really focuses on how different advancement strategies might play out—and vary— for women across different cultural contexts.

Collaborative Leadership Skills

Collaborative leadership skills are in high demand at a time when company loyalty is at a low. The contrast between leadership skills that are sought and how company cultures actually operate is striking. Companies are often their own worst enemies when it comes to promoting the leadership they claim to desire. When collaboration does not lead to promotion, it is no wonder that collaborators cannot be found.

According to a study by the HR research and consultancy firm Bersin & Associates, as the economy is showing signs of life, businesses are focusing less on cutting back and more on “tackling globalization challenges, rebuilding sales growth, fostering innovation and encouraging skills development”. All of this means that HR departments are trying to find new ways to share knowledge and build up collaborative leadership skills. For more about this new move towards collaboration check out the HRZone.com article on the study or the study itself.
